The Borough Clerk is the secretary to the Borough Council and keeps all records (resolutions, ordinances and minutes). The clerk makes agendas, keeps track of history and is the election official. In addition, the clerk is also the main contact for information and complaints, payroll, etc.
The role of the Borough Administrator is to manage the day-to-day operations of all borough departments. The administrator provides oversight of the operating and capital budgets, personnel administration, public info, development and management of special projects. Other responsibilities include coordinating strategic planning and implementing policies of the mayor and council.
The purpose of the Recreation Department is to provide a well-rounded recreational program for the citizens of New Providence. They plan, organize, direct, promote and schedule all recreational/athletic programs as well as activities within the borough. Provides maintenance, management and arranges for the acquisition of facilities.
The Tax Department bills and collects taxes on a quarterly basis. They enforce payments, deliver delinquency notices and mail yearly tax bills (July of current year).
Assesses real estate and property value for the purpose of general taxation.
The Building Department reviews and processes applications for construction permits, issues permits, as well as inspect and certify the work. The department tracks construction code violations and unsafe structures, all mandated by the Uniform Construction Code regulations. They also administer and enforce all ordinances related to issues of development, building, land use, zoning and property maintenance.
The Engineering Department provides engineering and architectural services to the Borough, Planning Board, and Zoning Board. They design and supervise Municipal construction services such as road improvement, drainage improvements, and specialty products such as the Salt Barn and future additions to the Public Works Center. The Engineering Department also provides support service to the DPW for field work and equipment bids.
The Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for maintaining Borough roads and infrastructure, drains and brooks, as well as snow plowing and removal. Also included in the DPW is building maintenance and garage mechanics.
The mission of the New Providence Police Department is to protect and serve all people in an efficient, effective and professional manner. The police aim to enhance the quality of life while instilling a sense of security within the community. It is the responsibility of every member of the New Providence Police Department to actively seek and find ways to promote and deliver a feeling of security and safety to the members of the community.
The purpose of the Municipal Court is to keep order and enforce state and municipal laws in the Borough.
This department is responsible for the treatment and maintenance of the plant, as well as the pipes coming into the plant. They are located at Park Place off of Commonwealth Avenue.
In addition to the fire department’s ultimate responsibility to suppress fires, they are involved in fire prevention, public fire safety education, and technical rescue.
